Aussie Freshman Punter Archie Wilson cries during press conference because he misses his family

At 19 years old, most young adults are still finding their footing—deciding on a career path, exploring independence, and staying anchored by the safety net of family and friends. But for someone in Australia with a dream that calls them to the United States, the decision to leave home is more than a leap of faith—it’s a dive into the unknown.

The emotional challenge is often the heaviest. Leaving behind parents, siblings, and childhood friends means giving up the daily comforts of familiarity. Holidays, birthdays, and life milestones suddenly happen without you. Video calls can bridge the gap, but they can’t replace a hug after a hard day or a shared laugh over dinner.

Archie Wilson, a freshman on University of Nebraska football team, was overcome with emotion at a news conference on Tuesday when asked about his family on the other side of the world. “That’s the tough part about being here. I love them a lot, and I miss them,” the Australian said.

Logistically, the move comes with its own hurdles, but for a 19-year-old, these challenges are compounded by the fact that they’re often facing them alone for the first time.

Yet, for those who dare, the reward can be life-changing. Pursuing a dream in the U.S. offers access to opportunities, networks, and experiences that may not exist back home. It builds resilience, independence, and a perspective that only comes from stepping far outside your comfort zone.

In the end, leaving home at 19 to chase a dream is hard—unquestionably so—but it’s also a testament to courage. It’s proof that sometimes the path to finding who you are begins with saying goodbye. This video right here is amazing! You have a fan in me Archie!
