A pair of blockbuster showdowns are just a few results from becoming reality at the 2025 Australian Open.
American Coco Gauff is two wins away from a showdown with top seed Aryna Sabalenka.
Gauff and Sabalenka are in the best form in the top half of the women’s singles draw. Each player produced a trio of straight-set victories.
Over in the men’s singles draw, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz are one win each away from facing each other in the quarterfinals.
The winner of that potential match could face No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev in the semifinals.
American Tommy Paul is the fourth top-15 seed left in the bottom half of the men’s singles draw. It’s unlikely that he beats any of Djokovic, Alcaraz and Zverev, but with one more win, he’ll at least have the chance to take down Zverev in the final eight.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina def. Jakub Mensik, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4, 6-2
Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic all took care of business on Friday.
Zverev and Djokovic won in three sets, while Alcaraz needed four sets to win his match.
The stage is nearly set for Djokovic and Alcaraz to face off in the quarterfinals, and for the winner of that match to play Zverev in the semifinals.
Djokovic needs to beat Jiri Lehecka in the fourth round. Lehecka has only made it past the fourth round at a major once in his career.
Alcaraz gets Jack Draper in the fourth round. The 15th-seeded Brit may be tired out against Alcaraz since he’s won three five-set matches in Melbourne.
Zverev’s biggest remaining challenger to get to the semis in American Tommy Paul, who won in straight sets on Friday.
Paul needs a fourth-round win to earn his third Grand Slam quarterfinal spot since the start of 2023.

Belinda Bencic def. Naomi Osaka, 7-6 (3) (retired)
Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff are now the clear favorites to meet in the semifinal in the top half of the women’s singles draw.
The path is wide open for both players now after Jessica Pegula’s shocking two-set loss to Olga Danilovic on Friday.
Sabalenka looks unbeatable in Melbourne so far. She’s put together three consecutive two-set wins.
The No. 1 seed is on a 17-match winning streak at the Australian Open. She won the last two titles and beat Gauff in the process to defending her crown in 2024.
Gauff also produced her third consecutive straight-set win of the tournament.
The American’s path to the semifinal got a lot easier on Friday with Pegula’s loss and Naomi Osaka’s injury retirement. Belinda Bencic and Paula Badosa are easier matchups on paper for Gauff than Pegula and Osaka.
Anything other than a Sabalenka-Gauff semifinal battle would be a stunner given how well both top-three seeds have performed so far in Melbourne.
