Ayo Edebiri Recreated Julia Roberts’s Iconic 1990 Golden Globes Suit—With One Major Difference

Conventional red carpet rules? That’s not Ayo Edebiri’s style. The actor always stands out at events with her edgy, modern looks and is all too happy to forgo sweeping princess gowns. This was the case at the Golden Globes 2025, where the The Bear star made a splash not only for her alternative dress but for the hidden homage to one of Julia Roberts’s most iconic Golden Globes fashion moments ever.

As so often in the past year, Edebiri wore the Spanish label Loewe, which skillfully underlines the actor’s style with its modernity.

“I felt really inspired by the costumes that [Loewe’s creative director Jonathan Anderson] designed for Luca Guadagnino’s movie Queer and I loved the idea of experimenting with menswear—especially a suit that felt like it was from that era,” The Bear actor told Vogue. No sooner said than done: Together with Loewe’s creative director and her stylist Danielle Goldberg, Edebiri chose a suit from the spring-summer 2025 men’s collection, which was then tailored for her.

The monochrome, oversized vibe in particular, consisting of a gray wool blazer, trousers and shirt, made the look a winner.

But as modern as Ayo Edebiri’s Loewe suit may be, it also pays homage to an iconic ’90s look. “[My stylist] Danielle and I were reminded of Julia Roberts’s gray suit from the 1990 Golden Globes,” the actor told Vogue, referencing the standout Armani number.

Between the gray color, the oversized fit, and the curly hair paired with a natural makeup, there are quite a few parallels between the looks. But there is also a major difference: Where Roberts wore a printed purple necktie, Edebiri picked an XXL, 14-carat gold feather necklace made to look like a necktie.

While Julia Roberts went home with one of the coveted trophies at the 47th Golden Globes in 1990, Ayo Edebiri went home empty-handed at the 82nd Golden Globes despite being nominated in the best actress in a television series, musical or comedy category. Obviously, though, she’s still a winner in our hearts.
