Bears predicted to sign Broncos five-year veteran to address ‘biggest weakness’

Why can’t the Chicago Bears ever have nice things?

Just three weeks ago, the Bears were 4-2, riding a three-game losing streak, and coming off a bye week with a big game against the Washington Commanders coming up. Then, they lost that Washington game on an unforgettable Hail Mary, and have scored just 12 points in the two weeks since.

Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams may still be the long-term starter the Bears have been seeking, but he won’t last long if the Chicago offensive line keeps performing like it did on Sunday. Williams was sacked an unbelievable nine times and took 13 hits from the lowly New England Patriots defense.

The Bears need to completely overhaul the offensive line, and that’s a task to be accomplished in free agency. Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department predicted that Chicago would sign Denver Broncos tackle Matt Peart as a free agent this upcoming spring.

“Darnell Wright and Braxton Jones are decent starters, but Chicago’s lack of depth at offensive tackle has been exposed recently. They should invest in a quality backup this offseason,” the authors said.

“Peart is a career-long swing tackle who has been playing well for the Broncos this season. On 142 total snaps through Week 9, he had only allowed six pressures (no sacks or QB hits) and earned a respectable 65.5 run-blocking grade from (Pro Football Focus).”

Peart, 27, played the first four years of his career with the New York Giants before becoming the Broncos’ go-to extra tackle this season. He signed a one-year, $1.2 million deal with the Broncos before the season and will likely command a similar short-term contract this spring.

The Bears need to think about a complete overhaul of their offensive line, from the top of the depth chart to the bottom. The 6-foot-7, 318-pound Peart would be a good piece to have around as Chicago enters what is likely to be a transitional period with a new coaching staff.
