Because of Kate Middleton, We Only Want to Wear Scarves Like This

If you thought you’d mastered the neck scarf, think again, because you haven’t seen Kate Middleton’s take on it yet.

If you’re up-to-date with trends, you’ll know that this small piece of fabric has become one of the season’s biggest obsessions, whether worn as a choker or wrapped around our waists. However, it took the Princess of Wales to show us the most elegant, dramatic, and special way to wear it: With all the pomp and ceremony we love.

It happened during the Remembrance Day service at the Cenotaph War Memorial in London, an event where we see her every year in formal black, as protocol dictates. And while it’s already a tradition for us to note the coat dresses she usually wears to this event—and the hats she often pairs with them—this time was different. The scarf she chose stole the show.

Peeking out from the top of her collar and draping over her coat, this lacy scarf has become the accessory we didn’t know we needed. It would be a perfect ally to add a different touch to our winter looks, giving them a hint of theatricality that we love.

The styling makes us think of the men’s attire of 18th-century Versailles, with those intricate handkerchiefs of delicate lace—in that case, they were usually white—that draped over coats and waistcoats. Middleton, for her part, wears it almost like a tie, but manages to create an interesting interplay of textures with the wool coat, adding class and even more sobriety to the ensemble.

The key is to fold the scarf over itself to create volume and to look for a lace trim that leaves the hem frayed, so as not to look too formal. Following these steps, we’ll have the perfect pair to adorn our coats throughout the holiday season. Once again, we’re taking notes from Kate Middleton.
