Good sync placement for older songs in new properties will always drive streaming interest in those songs. Kate Bush’s 1985 single “Running Up That Hill” did massive numbers with the release of season four of Netflix’s Stranger Things. But sync placement in television and movies aren’t the only opportunities for massive streaming exposure.Games like Grand Theft Auto and Cyberpunk 2077 feature in-game radio stations that feature real music—often driving discovery for a new generation. Some of the most popular songs in the GTA series have well over a billion streams—often driven by the success of their inclusion in the games.
The most played GTA track is “The Box” by Roddy Rich, which has racked up 1,987,059,103 streams. Heaven 17 recently turned down a $22,500 offer to have a track of theirs featured in GTA VI—forgoing the massive music discovery bonus that sync placements like these often provide.
