Ben VanSumeren injury: Eagles fullback out for season [UPDATE]

UPDATE: Eagles fullback Ben VanSumeren suffered a torn patellar tendon on Thursday night, according to a report from NFL insider Adam Schefter. His season is over. Very unfortunate news. The Eagles officially placed BVS on injured reserve to make room to sign Za’Darius Smith to the roster.

ORIGINAL STORY BELOW.

Things seemed to spiral out of control quickly on Thursday night when the Eagles took the field against the Cowboys, and FB Ben VanSumeren was injured on the opening kickoff. He threw his helmet in frustration, indicating this wasn’t a minor issue. The fullback was pretty quickly ruled out by the Eagles due to a knee injury.

VanSumeren had a good summer and was expected to have a bigger role this season, both on special teams and a smattering of opportunities on offense.

Unfortunately, the plan will now be placed on hold as the fullback deals with whatever took him out of the game mere seconds after the initial whistle. Several coaches spoke very highly of the FB this offseason and this will be a pretty big setback for the depth player.

Hopefully, he’ll be able to work his way back sooner rather than later, and the Eagles will adjust as needed until then.
