Billie Eilish surpasses The Weeknd to become Spotify’s most-streamed monthly artist, the streaming platform revealed on Monday.Billie Eilish has officially become Spotify’s most-streamed monthly artist, the streaming platform announced on Monday (August 19), dethroning The Weeknd. The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, showed support for Eilish on social media last week as she neared his record. At the time, she was less than a million listeners away from becoming Spotify’s most-streamed artist.
She exceeded the 100 million monthly listener count in June, making her the third and youngest artist to do so, behind only The Weeknd and Taylor Swift. Eight of Eilish’s tracks (out of 82) sit in Spotify’s Billions Club, a playlist for songs that have surpassed one billion streams — “Lovely” with Khalid, “Bad Guy,” “When the Party’s Over,” “Everything I Wanted,” “Ocean Eyes,” “Happier Than Ever,” “Idontwannabeyouanymore,” and “Bury a Friend.”
It’s notable that Billie Eilish is only two songs behind Taylor Swift, who has 11 songs on the Spotify Billions Club playlist. Swift boasts an extensive catalog, making that feat all the more impressive for the younger Eilish. Her third album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, released back in April, debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. All 10 of the album’s tracks debuted in the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. Both Eilish’s debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, and her sophomore release, Happier Than Ever, topped the Billboard 200 for three weeks.
The 22-year-old artist is enjoying a brat summer alongside Charli XCX with the English singer’s “Guess,” on which she features. Billie Eilish is also the youngest two-time Oscar winner with her song, “What Was I Made For?” featured on the Barbie film soundtrack. She has continued to enjoy a steady ascent in popularity even before the release of her most recent album.
