Brenden Aaronson scores in crucial Union Berlin victory

Union Berlin will head into the March international break feeling confident about its chances of remaining in the Bundesliga for next season.

Brenden Aaronson helped ease some worries for the German club on Saturday, scoring once in a 2-1 home triumph over Werder Bremen. The American attacker earned Man of the Match honors after delivering a strong 78 minutes in front of the Union Berlin faithful.

Yorbe Vertessen scored the opening goal for Union Berlin in the 50th minute before Aaronson doubled the hosts lead in quick succession. The 23-year-old was fed a pass from Vertessen inside of the Bremen box before unleashing a left-footed shot into the top corner.

It marked Aaronson’s second league goal of the season and his first when starting a match for Union Berlin.

Despite Werder Bremen cutting the deficit in half, Union Berlin would hang on for all three points at home. Aaronson led all players in duels won (12) and dribbles completed (5).

Union Berlin sits nine points clear of the relegation zone heading into its final eight matches of the league season.

Aaronson, who was not called in for U.S. men’s national team duty this month, very well could receive the nod following recent injuries to Josh Sargent and Luca De La Torre.
