Brief “Godzilla Minus One” Sequel Update
Toho
Filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki, who directed 2023’s much acclaimed period kaiju epic “Godzilla Minus One,” has given a brief update on the sequel.
Yamazaki wrote the screenplay and served as the VFX supervisor on the film which made many top ten lists and won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects last year. In November came the news that Toho was working on a follow-up with Yamazaki returning to write, direct, and handle VFX duties.
Appearing at the Visual Effects Society Awards, Yamazaki confirmed to Variety that he’s currently working on the screenplay and storyboards for the new film.
He adds that it will have a bigger budget than “Godzilla Minus One,” which was rather astonishingly made for under $15 million and went on to generate over $110 million at the worldwide box office.
Story details and setting for the new film are under wraps at this time so it’s not clear if any characters from the previous film will return.
Yunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki starred in ‘Minus One’ which was set in postwar Japan and saw Godzilla bringing new devastation to an already scorched landscape.
With no military intervention or government help in sight, the survivors must join together in the face of despair and fight back.
