Brighton fans comments on signing Yankuba Minteh from Newcastle United – Interesting
Brighton fans have been reacting to their club signing Yankuba Minteh.
Newcastle United selling the 19 year old for a reported initial £33m fee.
A deal which could eventually potentially prove to be a record club signing for the south coast club.
So what do Brighton fans make of their new signing?
Interesting to hear what they’ve had to say…
Brighton fans commenting on signing Yankuba Minteh via their North Stand Chat message board:
‘Why have Newcastle sold Yankuba Minteh though? If he’s so good. It’s not like they need the money.’
‘They do. PSR. Didn’t want to sell him but had to offload at least one player that would be almost total profit on the books.’
‘Wow. Excellent news to wake up to on Monday morning.
Definitely stepping up our game in the recruitment department with another £30m splash of the cash.
Get in there’
‘A possible record signing at 1am with no fanfare, we are a strange club at the moment.’
‘Makes perfect sense simply because people knew this deal had to be done by Newcastle by midnight last night.
‘Newcastle signed him a year ago for about £6m, and after a year playing in the Dutch league, we’ve just paid £30m. Is this a good deal?’
‘It certainly is for Newcastle as it will show as about £24m in pure profit for their PSR (less any sell on owed to OB). It’s a big fee for us, but if it works out then we will have signed a gem and his stats etc look impressive.’
‘Certainly a good deal for Newcastle. Hopefully turns out to be good for everyone. Downside with shopping in England – it gets pretty expensive. But if he ends up as good as Tross or Mitoma, then its easily worth it.’
‘Yankuba Minteh is very one footed, hopefully he’ll work on that.’
‘Maradona didn’t.’
‘What happened to buying these players a year earlier for £6m?’
‘Other clubs can also sign young players.’
‘Really exciting signing this, glad we finally got the March cover we badly needed last season.’
‘Cant see Bloom spending £30m for a player to warm the bench. Does he play on right or left.’
‘I think this could be similar to the Baleba signing. What looks like a huge fee for a young player that may not be completely ready, but could end up looking like a bargain.
It’s the type of wonder kid we couldn’t/wouldn’t sign 3 years ago.’

‘Minteh’s issue was he wanted to sign with a Premier League club ( or stay signed to Newcastle and play for Newcastle) not a European league.
Clearly Brighton is a better option than Everton or Forest which were the other possibilities so we have given him exactly what he wanted (and Newcastle less than Lyon would have paid for him apparently to boot).’
‘Read about Toon fans hoping for sell on clauses, i think that might be wishful thinking given the scale of the initial fee.’
‘I may be wrong but I’m not convinced that Newcastle had any intention of selling Minteh after his loan period tbh not originally but were obliged to, to help them comply with PSR – hence their apparent initial wish for a buy back clause in the Lyon negotiations – It seems he was a development player for them and could have raked back far more profit for them after a few seasons in the EPL. But he was a convenient asset that could they could sell off for a quick easy £33m yet still make around a £27m profit to ensure it would get over the line yesterday. They will still further profit if Minteh’s contract contains a sell on clause, which is very possible given their belief he is an investment player with a stack of potential.
With Anderson going to Forest (netting Newcastle a combined £68m before the PSR deadline) and Minteh being sold, I would say both these players were sold under the value of their current development potential for Newcastle and probably sold for less than if they’d not been sold under pressure but later in the window.’
‘This is correct. Though I’d say that with us paying the £30m up front (rather than in instalments), I’d be quite surprised if the deal was favourable for Newcastle in terms of a sell-on. Seems that they needed the money in the accounts now, and they got that, I’m sure we’d not give them much additional to hold on to.’
‘We almost certainly aren’t paying up front – most transfers are paid in instalments.
That really doesn’t matter to Newcastle though – they needed to record the accounting transaction on or before the 30th June for the PSR shenanigans. When the cash actually arrives in their bank account doesn’t impact that at all.
There’ll almost certainly be add-ons too, including a sell-on clause.’
