Bucs vs. Lions: Updated Odds, Stat Predictions for 2024 NFC Divisional Game
Both the Lions and the Buccaneers have leaky defenses that have allowed opposing offenses to tally big numbers.
Even in a victory over the Los Angeles Rams a week ago, the Lions allowed 425 yards of total offense, including 357 through the air. You can beat their aggressive corners and safeties for big plays, as quarterback Matthew Stafford did numerous times in the match-up.
Bucs QB Baker Mayfield did the same to the Philadelphia Eagles, throwing for 337 yards and three touchdowns in a route of the defending NFC champions.
The former No. 1 overall pick has played some of his best football down the stretch, including 11 touchdowns to just two interceptions and a career highlight of a game in Green Bay, in which he became just the second quarterback to attain a perfect 158.3 quarterback rating at Lambeau Field.
He has been red-hot and with a receiver corps that includes Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, numbers similar to those that he posted against the Eagles are not out of the question.
The same could be said for Jared Goff, Mayfield’s fellow former No. 1 overall pick, who captains the league’s third-best offense.
Goff completed 81.5 percent of his passes against Los Angeles, for 277 yards and touchdown.
The Cal product is capable of an even bigger game, but is typically limited by Detroit’s run-first system. The Lions will likely lean on backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, though, as the Buccaneers also give up the seventh-most yards per carry in the league with 3.8.
The Lions, under offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, should be able to exploit the Buccaneers’ 23rd-ranked defense to their advantage. Look for, potentially, 200 yards on the ground and at least that many through the air as Detroit feeds on the hometown crowd and cashes its ticket to the NFC Championship.
