Caitlin Clark 3-pointers: How Iowa star can break Stephen Curry’s single-season NCAA record

Caitlin Clark announced her intention to enter the WNBA Draft on Thursday, but her record-setting season at Iowa is far from over.

Not only do Clark and the Hawkeyes still have a national championship on their minds, but the reigning player of the year still has more records to break. She’s on track to break Pete Maravich’s NCAA scoring record on Sunday, days after breaking the unofficial women’s scoring record held by Lynette Woodard.

Clark is also making history from beyond the arc. She set the NCAA women’s single-season record for 3-pointers in Wednesday’s blowout of Minnesota, and the overall single season record co-owned by Stephen Curry is now well within reach.

Here’s a look at Clark’s 3-point total and how she can break the NCAA single season record.

— The Athletic (@TheAthletic) February 29, 2024Clark has been a sharpshooter since she arrived at Iowa — her career-high percentage from beyond the arc actually came during her freshman season — but she’s taken on an even higher volume over the last two years. Clark made 140 3-pointers in 2022-23, and she’s sitting on a record 156 this season with at least three games remaining.

Clark now only needs seven 3-pointers to break the NCAA single-season record, held by former Davidson star Stephen Curry and former Liberty guard Darius McGhee. Even at 156, she stands sixth on the NCAA all-time single season leaderboard. That puts Clark on pace to cruise past the record and potentially shatter it if Iowa can make a deep NCAA Tournament run.

DeCOURCY: Why jump to WNBA was Caitlin Clark’s best option

Could Clark threaten the career record? It would require a somewhat deep run for Iowa, as she currently trails former Oklahoma standout Taylor Robertson by 34. The career record had been 497 until Robertson shattered it last season and finished her career with 537. Clark, in 22 fewer games than Robertson, is sitting on 503.

Clark’s average of 5.4 made 3-pointers per game would put her on track to break Robertson’s record in seven games. That will require Iowa to advance in both the Big Ten Tournament and the NCAA Tournament, in all likelihood, but it might not require the Hawkeyes to go all the way to the Final Four depending on how the Big Ten Tournament plays out.

What about the overall NCAA record? That’s almost certainly out of reach, as Antoine Davis’ career total of 588 will be tough to rival with the opportunities Clark has remaining. Davis did play five seasons to Clark’s four, however.

NCAA single season 3-point leadersOnly five players in NCAA history — all on the men’s side — have made more 3-pointers in a season than Clark, who has at least three games remaining between the regular season, Big Ten Tournament and NCAA Tournament.
