Cardinals’ Nolan Arenado calls for Rockies to start over
Nolan Arenado joined the St. Louis Cardinals in 2021 and has since been one of the best players on the Cardinals’ roster. In 2022, he led the National League in WAR with 7.9, and has won three Gold Gloves and been to three All-Star games since joining the Cardinals.
He came to St. Louis after eight years with the Colorado Rockies. Amid the Rockies’ historically awful start to the season, Arenado was asked for his comments on his former organization.
In an article by Andy McCullough of The Athletic, Arenado commented on the Rockies’ terrible start. “The only way you get out of this,” Arenado explained, “in my opinion, is you have to really start over.”
Arenado continued to explain what the Rockies need to do. “Trade guys that have value and deal with the restart,” Areando said. “But I don’t know if thats what (ownwer Dick) Monfort wants to do. That’s not really what they like to do.”
Despite all indicators pointing towards the Rockies being sellers at the MLB trade deadline, Arenado sees a scenario where they don’t sell. Monfort is a stingy owner in the sense that he won’t trade his players when their value is at its highest.
Arenado, for example, went for significantly less than everyone expected he’d go for. For the Cardinals, the trade has worked out wonderfully. But the Rockies have since floundered.Â
They’re among the bottom feeders every year, so much so that Arenado has a clear vision for how he’d fix the team. His call for the Rockies to begin a fire sale of their tradeable players isn’t a novel concept.Â
Arenado, now on the Cardinals, who have a winning record, is far away from the Rockies disaster. But the former Rockies third baseman, who was top-ten in MVP voting five years in a row, couldn’t help from comment on his former team’s downfall. Arenado called for his former team to “start over.”
