Chelsea defender completes move away from club

Chelsea travel to Nottingham Forest on Sunday knowing that only a victory will guarantee their place in next season’s Champions League.Ā

The Blues currently sit fifth in the Premier League table and would qualify for the competition as things stand, however defeat at The City Ground would see Enzo Maresca’s side miss out.

A draw against Forest could be enough to qualify for the Champions League, however the West London outfit would be reliant on certain results elsewhere.

In the meantime, one of Chelsea’s academy graduates has agreed a deal to depart the club.

The Blues confirmed on Wednesday that defender Bashir Humphreys is set to complete a permanent move to Burnley on July 1.

Humphreys, 22, is one of a number of players to have graduated from Chelsea’s Cobham academy in recent years but fail to establish himself in the first team at Stamford Bridge.

In total he has played just twice for the Blues at senior level, however he has enjoyed successful loan spells at German side Paderborn, as well as Swansea City and Burnley.

Humphreys’ senior debut for Chelsea came during a 4-0 defeat against Manchester City in the FA Cup in January 2023, and later featured in a 2-1 win over AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup.

The Englishman spent the current campaign on loan at Turf Moor and played 25 times for Scott Parker’s side as they finished second and secured promotion back to the Premier League.

In February, he scored as the Clarets defeated Hull City 2-0 on their way to securing second place in the second tier.

Humphreys is capable of playing as a full-back on either flank, or can also be deployed as a central defender.
