Cher Wants Meryl Streep in the Third ‘Mamma Mia!’ Movie

Spoilers ahead for both Mamma Mia! and Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again.

Finally, someone in Hollywood is talking sense! Iconic Oscar winner Cher is down for a third Mamma Mia! movie, and she wants Meryl Streep to be in it, even if her character is dead. Yes, exactly.

“We’re talking about it,” Cher revealed to Entertainment Weekly. “I don’t know when they’re going to do it, but I know they’re talking about it.”

“That was an amazing experience and really fun,” she added, reflecting on the experience of singing ABBA songs on an island in Croatia (the first shot in Greece, the second in Fake Greece). “And I took it on a lark because Mary Louise was in there, and I love her. The idea that I was her mother was hysterical.”

Did you know Meryl Streep’s real name is Mary Louise? I didn’t, but now I do.

If you’re one of those people who thinks they’re too good for ABBA and doesn’t want joy in their life and you haven’t seen the movies, the first is about Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) trying to figure out which of three men knocked up her mom Donna (Streep) back in the day so he can walk her down the aisle.

The second movie is about Sophie dealing with Donna’s death, plus flashbacks of young Donna (Lily James) hooking up with her three paramours. In the second, we learn that Donna is recently deceased, and her mother, played by Cher, drops by for a visit.

Now, here’s where Mamma Mia! lore comes into play. In the first movie, Donna makes a reference to her mother being dead, and you could write this off as a figure of speech due to their estrangement, or as just a plot hole where her mom then appears, very much alive, and there’s another explanation: People can come back to life in this universe.

ABBA released a new album in 2021, and it’s good. Anything is possible.

“I keep saying, ‘Meryl, you’ve got to come back,’” Cher told the outlet. “‘It’ll be fun. You’ll have a good time. You’ll be able to sing.’”

Take my money!!!!
