Chiefs ex-2nd round pick projected as ‘prime cut candidate’ to save $1.5 million
Finding wide receivers who can excel with Patrick Mahomes as their quarterback has proven more difficult than the Kansas City Chiefs might have anticipated.
In the post-Tyreek Hill era in Kansas City, the Chiefs have had a far less dynamic passing offense than expected. There have been occasional standouts (Rashee Rice before his injury comes to mind), but a lot more disappointments.
Could one of those recent disappointments be on the outs this winter?
The Chiefs drafted Skyy Moore with the 54th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, and hopes were high for the ex-Western Michigan wideout. He had 4.4 speed, projected as a potential punt returner, and put up almost 1,300 receiving yards in the 2021 college season.
Three years later, the tone around Moore has definitely changed. In a recent article, Yardbarker’s NFL staff proposed Moore as a “prime cut candidate” this spring, just to help Kansas City save a small amount of cap space.
“In three seasons with the club, Moore — a second-round pick in 2022 — has just two touchdown catches (including playoffs),” the authors wrote. “Per Over the Cap’s projections, the Chiefs would save $1.58M in cap space if they cut the wideout with a post-June 1 designation.”
Through three NFL seasons, Moore’s career-high in receiving yards is 250, set in his rookie year. This season, he didn’t record a single catch in six games played and four targets received. He played 20% of the team’s offensive snaps in 2024.
Moore also never played more than 12% of Kansas City’s special teams snaps in a season, so any hope of becoming a return ace appears to have been extinguished.
Every team wants to hit on their second-round picks almost as badly as they want to hit on their firsts. But at some point, the writing is on a wall when a player has fared as poorly as Moore.
