City make ‘fresh approach’ for Livramento as two alternative options lined up
Manchester City reportedly make an approach to Newcastle United for right-back Tino Livramento, though they have two alternative targets in mind as well.
Manchester City are reportedly prepared to pay in excess of £50m for Newcastle United right-back Tino Livramento, though two alternatives have been lined up.
Pep Guardiola’s side were displaced as Premier League champions by Liverpool last term, with their third-placed finish their worst placement since 2016-17.
City have spent significantly in the summer transfer window – adding to their outlay in the January window – in a bid to reclaim their crown, but they are still on the lookout for further defensive reinforcements.
Veteran right-back Kyle Walker ha departed to Burnley, and there is a feeling amongst supporters that the team could struggle unless they replace his defensive nous.
TBR Football report that the Citizens could make a significant offer to Newcastle for Livramento, but should their attempts to sign the defender prove unsuccessful, they are said to have lined up Juventus pair Andrea Cambiaso and Nicolo Savona as alternative targets.
Why Newcastle are unlikely to sell LivramentoCity may have ambitions of signing Livramento from the Toon, but their ability to bring the defender to the Etihad could be significantly impacted by Newcastle’s potential sale of Alexander Isak.
The Swedish forward has reportedly asked to leave the club amid interest from Liverpool, and his exit would boost the coffers of the Magpies considerably, meaning they would likely have no need to sell any other players this summer.
Selling stars to raise further funds could be important for Newcastle given they have so far failed to land a number of targets, so City will have to act quickly if they are to sign Livramento.
TBR Football also claim that the 22-year-old has been approached by Newcastle, with a view to him agreeing a new deal on wages that would make him one of the team’s highest earners.
Would Cambiaso or Savona be enough to replace Walker?Guardiola has played an open and expansive brand of football throughout his coaching career, and while this style of play has been vulnerable to counter-attacks at times, Walker managed to prevent these moments from becoming too costly at the Etihad.
Cambiaso and Savona are more expansive than Walker but are arguably not as defensively resilient as he was at his peak, and it remains to be seen if they can fit into City’s XI.
Savona is only 22 years old and has played just one season of top-flight football, while Cambiaso is 25 and has four Serie A campaigns under his belt.
Perhaps it would be more sensible for City to target Cambiaso given he is the more experienced pro, and that could be vital if they are to challenge Liverpool in 2025-26.
