Conor McGregor surprisingly slams Irish MMA after Khabib Nurmagomedov’s controversial putdown

Khabib Nurmagomedov reignited his feud with Conor McGregor this week as he tore into Ireland and its crop of MMA fighters.

The pair shared one of the most bitter rivalries in the history of any sport, but had stayed relatively separate from one another in recent years. However, as promotion begins to ramp up for Usman Nurmagomedov’s Bellator lightweight title defence against Paul Hughes, things have heated up.

Khabib claimed that Ireland’s MMA exports aside from Hughes and McGregor were limited, while noting that Dagestan has the superior crop of fighters. This has irked the Irish MMA community, but now the former two-weight world champion seems to be finding the humor in it all.

Who is Conor McGregor? Step inside the hedonistic life of UFC’s ‘notorious’ bad boy and legendary double champKhabib Nurmagomedov shreds Irish MMA in shock rantIn a video promoting the Champions Series event in Dubai this month, Khabib Nurmagomedov gave his opinion on the supposed feud between Ireland and Dagestan. The event is being billed as Dagestan vs Ireland 2, with a number of undercard fights leading to Hughes vs Nurmagomedov.

Khabib believe there isn’t much of a feud given the vastly higher number of champions to emerge from the even smaller population of Dagestan than Ireland, who at the top level has really only produced a small number.

“Brother, Ireland don’t have fighters, brother,” Nurmagomedov said in an interview with the PFL’s social channel. “Let’s be honest. How many fighters do you know from Ireland? Paul Hughes and Conor [McGregor]. And who else? There is no fighters, brother.

“You come Dagestan, you can understand. You know, so many organizations, they don’t even sign Dagestan fighters because they worry about like, everybody can become champion. Let’s be honest: Dagestan level of MMA here (raises arm high). But Ireland level, like not even half of Dagestan level.”

Conor McGregor hit back at Khabib Nurmagomedov with outlandish videoAfter Nurmagomedov’s comments, McGregor went on an outlandish social media rant that appeared to have little to do with the comments. However, he later shared a video showing the key differences between his era atop the sport and the current age of Dagestani fighters ruling MMA.

McGregor posted a minute-and-a-half video titled ‘UFC during the McGregor era’, which was a montage of all of the Irishman’s best moments under the UFC banner. The video then transitions to ‘UFC during Dagestan era’ and it is a montage of Khabib and Islam Makhachev wrestling their opponents.

McGregor has notoriously gone at Khabib and his team for their wrestling-heavy fight style, claiming that they are ‘crotch sniffers’, etc.

Now, Conor McGregor sees the funny side of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s commentsHowever, McGregor now seems to be taking his own aim at the Irish MMA community, noting that a few fighters have taken Nurmagomedov’s side in the years since their fight. Perhaps the most notable case would be former PFL star Myles Price.

He was a former teammate of McGregor’s and ended up fighting in a kind of defacto battle of the camps against Peter Queally in 2019.

McGregor tweeted and deleted a message that read: “Loads of Irish fighter licking his a*** years then he says yous are all s****. #Classic.” He then shared the message on his Instagram story with the caption “Pass it on, #sadasses.”
