Blessed with the gift of the gab, the Irishman entertained the fans while simultaneously mentally breaking down his opponents, often beating them long before they ever set foot in the cage.

While McGregor is no longer the force he was in his prime, Chael Sonnen still remembers the competitor he used to be, claiming that version of the Irish star could be the greatest fighter of all time.

In a video uploaded to his YouTube channel, ‘The American Gangster’ said: “He owns the term ‘champ-champ’; he’s the one that coined it. He’s the one that brought it to our industry.

“He’s not a champ-champ, he’s a champ-champ-champ, he forgot that he won the interim championship — I was there. I watched his fight with Chad Mendes. I watched Sinead O’Connor sing him to the cage. He forgot, he didn’t trademark it, he only trademarked champ-champ.

“Do you realize how interesting that is? Dana White had come out and said, ‘Conor McGregor is the greatest fighter in the world’. He took that and parlayed it against the greatest boxer (Floyd Mayweather) that sport has ever seen, and McGregor went 30 minutes with him.

“But that’s Conor. The other stuff that you’re seeing, and a guy that isn’t willing to let go of his identity and a guy that loves his craft so much he’s hanging in there even in the hard times, deserves to be recognized.

“But that’s not the part if you want to spin the story that should be remembered. Conor McGregor was truly perhaps the greatest fighter who’s ever done this.”
