Could the Saints sign former Packers CB Jaire Alexander?
The New Orleans Saints have done extensive work this offseason to target many of their pressing roster needs, but the cornerback room is one of the main positions that still needs upgrades. Second-year corner Kool-Aid McKinstry is âexpectedâ to improve from last season, but betting on that is a massive risk. If this does not happen, New Orleans would potentially be left without a real CB1, and this could destroy any potential scheme that Brandon Staley decides to use. It would make too much sense for the Saints to target another corner in free agency, with Asante Samuel Jr. being the popular name, but there might be another option. This Morning, All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander was released by the Green Bay Packers after a trade could not be found, per Ian Rapoport.
The #Packers and Jaire Alexander agreed to explore a potential trade this spring, while a restructured contract was also discussed. In the end, Green Bay and Alexander move on with a clean break. https://t.co/YeFHktkDQY

As I mentioned, this current cornerback room is something to be concerned about, and with a player like Jaire Alexander being available, a potential contract must be explored. He is only 28 years old and can be the number 1 corner on almost every roster in the league, but the two factors that must be considered are injury history and the contract.
Jaire Alexander has missed 10 games in the past two seasons, and with the Saintsâ history with injured cornerbacks, a history like this should be considered when discussing a move like this. In Addition, if Alexander is asking for a contract similar to what he was getting paid in Green Bay, the Saints must stay away. A perfect scenario for New Orleans would be a contract reminiscent of what the Saints did with Chase Young: A 1-year contract filled with injury protection that allows Jaire Alexander to earn money by being healthy. This potential contract would be low risk and allow the Saints to move on from Alexander after this season.
From the Saintsâ perspective, going after Jaire Alexander makes all the sense in the world, but from Alexanderâs perspective, the Saints may not be the option. On paper, the roster is not considered a contender, which was a primary factor in why RB Nick Chubb signed with the Texans over the Saints. This will be a central point for many veteran players who can still contribute to winning teams, and Alexander may not view the Saints that way. On the other hand, Alexander may just be looking for someone to offer him a decent prove-it deal and guarantee him the CB1 spot. The Saints can do just that, and if an agreement can be reached between the two parties, an All-Pro player would be on their way to New Orleans.
