Cowboys could swing surprising trade for third-year Patriots receiver

The Dallas Cowboys did not address their need for a No.2 receiver through the NFL Draft or free agency. However, there is still time to get a high-upside player through trade.

According to NFL Network’s Kevin Patra, the Cowboys have not ruled out adding a receiver at this point in the offseason. However, they will give the guys they have a chance first.

“It definitely was a big-time thought, but the train has not left the station if improvement is needed from what we’ve got on campus,” Jones told reporters of their approach at receiver this offseason. “I’m looking at the same sheet maybe you got in front of you that I have in front of me and it shows our No. 114 pick trade to Carolina for Jonathan Mingo. Well, we’ve obviously known that.

“My point is that (Cowboys EVP) Stephen (Jones) says it best, it’s a year-round deal, but we don’t have to be through at receiver in any way,” Jones continued. “As a matter of fact, as we got on into the draft, the likelihood of creating competition if we did go out and did something that’s important to us in free agency, started making the depth we’ve got on the roster right now with our possible twos and threes that might be competitive there if we brought someone that was obvious to everybody that he’s your second man. So, I’m just giving you the benefit of the mentality there. But definitely the idea that we could, if the opportunity comes up, if we want to, can address this in free agency.”

With options in free agency limited, the Cowboys could give the New England Patriots a call for one of their receivers. Pats Pulpit’s Brian Hines tabbed the Cowboys as the ideal landing spot for third-year receiver Keyshon Boute.

“Boutte could profile as a low-volume X-receiver in Josh McDaniels’ offense, but the production last year at 23 years old would likely lead to him having the most trade value of the bubble players,” wrote Hines. “One team that would make plenty of sense as a potential partner for Boutte or any receiver: the Dallas Cowboys.”

Boute could suddenly be the odd man out for the Patriots. The team signed Stefon Diggs, signed Mack Hollins and drafted Kyle Williams in round three of the NFL Draft. Demario Douglas is also ahead of him on the depth chart.

Boute has more trade value than Ja’Lynn Polk as well. Boute had 589 yards and three touchdowns last season. He could be a solid No.2 option for the Cowboys if they do not like what they see from Jalen Tolbert in the offseason.
