Cowboys finalizing blockbuster trade with Steelers for wide receiver George Pickens

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys are on the verge of a blockbuster trade that sends wide receiver George Pickens to Dallas.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the two sides are still finalizing the deal that will include draft pick compensation. The trade is expected to be done on Wednesday.

“ESPN sources: Dallas and Pittsburgh are working to finalize a trade that will send wide receiver George Pickens to the Cowboys in exchange for draft pick compensation. The trade is expected to be finalized today,” Schefter wrote.

FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz is reporting that the Steelers will be getting a third-round pick back, and the two teams will swap Day 3 picks. Not a bad haul for Pickens.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) May 7, 2025It goes without saying this is a huge deal for both teams.

The Cowboys have been in search of an adequate running mate for CeeDee Lamb for quite some time now. Pickens no doubt checks that box and now gives Dallas one of the better one-two punches in the NFL.

The concern, however, is that the Cowboys are giving up draft compensation for a player who could leave in free agency in 2026. We’ll see if Pickens’ contract gets addressed before then.

Meanwhile, the Steelers are now back in the boat for a wide receiver upgrade after spending a year trying to find a good running mate for Pickens. The team acquired DK Metcalf earlier this offseason, but the dream of a Metcalf-Pickens pairing is finished.

It was always possible the Steelers would trade Pickens, given his contract situation and volatile attitude. It is now clear Pittsburgh couldn’t trust Pickens enough to give him an extension, or even stick around for another year.

Barring a great option becoming available via trade, Pittsburgh will now have to look to free agency to replace Pickens. The two best options are Keenan Allen and Amari Cooper.
