After being removed as the starting quarterback of the New York Giants and demoted to the bottom of the depth chart this week, Daniel Jones appears to be getting used to life as a fourth-stringer.

Per The Athletic’s Dan Duggan, Jones was seen lined up at safety as a member of the scout team defense during an offensive install period for new starting quarterback Tommy DeVito in the open portion of Thursday’s practice.

In his newfound position on the scout team defense, Jones shared the field with some practice squad offensive linemen, tight ends coach Tim Kelly, assistant quarterback coach Christian Jones and offensive assistant Christian Daboll.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll announced on Monday that Jones has been removed from his starting role and replaced by DeVito due to his lackluster production on the field. On Wednesday, Duggan reported that Jones was the fourth quarterback in individual drills behind DeVito, backup Drew Lock and even practice squad quarterback Tim Boyle.

It makes sense that the Giants are being cautious with Jones’ participation, as they don’t want to face a disastrous scenario where he gets injured. The $23 million injury guarantee for the 2025 season becomes fully guaranteed if he gets injured and fails to pass a physical this offseason.

Jones lost his job after the Giants offense struggled immensely on the way to a 2-8 record. New York had struggled to find the end zone with Jones under center and ranks last in the NFL with 15.6 points per game. The 27-year-old threw for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions, failing to live up to expectations after signing a four-year, $160 million deal less than two years ago.

DeVito will try to help the Giants end a five-game losing streak when they meet the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-6) on Sunday.
