‘Deadside’ Publisher Blindsided By Massive Influx Of Players Following Xbox Launch

The free trial has proved extremely popular

Last week, we brought you news of multiple Xbox shadow drops including the open world survival shooter Deadside, and it turns out that game has proved surprisingly popular since its arrival on both Xbox and PlayStation consoles.

Taking to social media this week, the CEO of Deadside publisher ‘tinyBuild’ advised the team were totally unprepared for the level of demand on console, with the game racking up 100,000 players in seven days since its console launch.

Alex Nichiporchik, CEO of tinyBuild: “So how well did Deadside do on Xbox and PlayStation in the first week of launch? We added 100k players in 7 days to the community. Completely misjudged the demand. Thanks for your support everyone.”

Alex went into more detail in a post on the tinyBuild website, advising that the 100k number includes everyone who either bought the game or just started the free two-hour trial on Xbox and PlayStation. No sales figures have been provided, but apparently the conversion rate from trial to paid game is around 20% and still growing.

“While we won’t comment on exact number of sales, the conversion rate from trial to paid game is steadily growing – reaching close to 20%.”

“5% of players decide to buy the game before the trial is over. A significant portion of the audience just directly buys the game.”

We find this particularly interesting – it’s so rare to hear anything about how a free trial performs for developers and publishers on Xbox these days, and the stats appear to suggest that despite the low-ish conversion rate, Deadside would have received nowhere near 100,000 players on console if it wasn’t for the trial’s existence in the first place. In other words, then, a free trial can do wonders for getting people to try your game in a crowded marketplace.

Anyway, go and check it out for yourself if you want! Deadside is available right now on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S for ÂŁ20.99 / $24.99, with the free trial available by simply navigating to the game’s Xbox Store page on your console.

“An Open World Survival Shooter blending hardcore PVP and PVE action. Secure precious loot in safe zones or build your own fortress in the wild. With intense gunfights, stunning visuals, and performance smooth enough for any system, the challenge awaits!”
