Dexta Daps Charms As Skinny Fabulous Wins Big At 2024 Caribbean Music Awards
The 2024 Caribbean Music Awards took place last night (Aug 30) in Flatbush Brooklyn, New York, the most appropriate locale for such an event outside of the Caribbean itself. The neighborhood has a rich history of Caribbean culture, with many of our island brothers and sisters finding a sense of familiarity there whenever they touch down in the concrete jungle.
On this occasion, the familial vibes were high, as hosts, Queen of Dancehall Spice and comedian Majah Hype, reminded the Kings Theater crowd that all Caribbean nations deserve recognition. They did just that throughout the evening, as the show jumped off with a set featuring performances from artists throughout the tropical region, including Trinidad’s Ravi B — who also took home an award for his contributions to Chutney Soca — Leadpipe x Jus-Jay King of Barbados, and St Vincent & The Grenadines’ Skinny Fabulous, who would go on to have a VERY good night!
The dapper fan-favorite would go on to win three awards, including two for his collaboration with fellow multi-award winner, Trinidad’s Nailah Blackman, “Come Home,” as well as the award for Male Soca Artist of the Year.
“Sometimes, when you come from a little, tiny place, you’re surrounded by geography that tells you you should have tiny dreams. But, I believe in myself, I believe in Soca music, I believe in the people. So, I want to say thank you to everyone who supports Skinny Fabulous on my journey…I just want to say thank you so much for nominating me and for choosing me, thank you everybody!,” he exclaimed while accepting his second award of the evening. Other notable winners included Shaggy – whose appearance on-stage turned the venue upside-down — Patrice Roberts, “Bouyon Boss” Asa Banton, and Dexta Daps, who also charmed the crowd during his performance and hilarious attempt at co-presenting an award.
Honorees included the aforementioned Ravi B, Alison Hinds, Cedella Marley, Marcia Griffiths, Sherwin Gardner, and Mighty Sparrow.
Presenters also turned heads, as DJ Cassidy landed in Brooklyn just days after spinning for the DNC. He presented alongside Melyssa Ford, as other presenters included Spragga Benz, Angela Yee, and Wyclef Jean.
