The Weeknd is taking a break from his break with a new album called Hurry Up Tomorrow. Abel Tesfaye unveiled the title of the new album on social media earlier today.Tesfaye says the album is the final project of his trilogy that began with After Hours in 2020, followed by Dawn FM in 2022. Details about the album beyond the name remain a mystery, but The Weeknd himself has released a few teasers for fans to hint at the musical direction and themes of the new album.
The Weeknd is performing a special live concert at Estádio Morumbi in São Paulo, which will be livestreamed on YouTube. In October, he’s concluding his After Hours Til the Dawn Tour with four shows in Australia—two in Melbourne and two in Sydney. After that—his schedule appears clear to drop his latest music project. So here’s a quick glimpse into what you might expect from the upcoming album.
“Yesterday was 14 years ago, we held our breath, falling into a shimmering sea in the after hours of the night… Attempted to cleanse the wounds with melodies and lights, a bulletproof bandage to shield what lies beneath,” the statement about his new album begins.
“In a place where the seasons never changed, where time ceased to exist. But therein lays the problem. Today has felt like an endless spin, I keep distorting the truth, immune to the dizziness, numb to the nausea. What lies beneath—screams in silence.”
“I look in the mirror and feel both old and new, stuck in limbo and unable to move. I still haven’t faced myself,” The Weeknd’s statement continues. “More songs could help, but what do I have left to say? Woe is me in my gilded cage, right? The very thing that once made me invincible failed me on the world stage. A new trauma surfaced, opening floodgates. A path awaits. When today ends, I’ll discover who I am.”The Weeknd first began teasing new music was on the way back in July. He released an AI version of himself as a child with the caption, “What’s Coming Abel?” Another teaser released on Instagram featured dream-like visuals from both After Hours and Dawn FM. The caption showcasing these images evolving reads, “There are three chapters in this tale.”
In May 2023, The Weeknd informed the world he was getting ready to close the chapter of his life that uses his famous moniker. “It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter,” Tesfaye told W magazine. “I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m trying to shed that skin and be reborn.”
Is Hurry Up Tomorrow a bookend for The Weeknd or the beginning of a new chapter? We’ll have to wait to see. Check the DMN Pro new music tracker for the most up-to-date information on this upcoming album release.
