Disney and BBC announced a brand-new Doctor Who spin-off series, The War Between The Land And The Sea, earlier today at San Diego Comic-Con.
The spin-off is a five-part series starring Russell Tovey (American Horror Story: NYC) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Loki). The War Between The Land And The Sea will also see the return of Doctor Who alumni actors Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Alexander Devrient as Colonel Ibrahim as well as the villainous return of the Sea Devils.
Here’s a brief plot synopsis of the series:
“When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war.”
The War Between the Land and the Sea was created by Doctor Who showrunner and executive producer Russell T Davies and frequent series writer Pete McTighe. Alongside Davies, the series’ executive producers include Phil Collinson, Joel Collins, Julie Gardner, and Jane Tranter.
“I’m so lucky to work with such a magnificent cast. And this is a huge, muscular, thrilling drama which will shake The Whoniverse to its foundations,” Davies wrote in a press release. “When the Doctor’s not in town, the whole of humanity is in trouble.“
The War Between the Land and the Sea will begin filming next month. Dylan Holmes-Williams, the director behind 73 Yards and Dot and Bubble, will direct the series. Although no release date was given, the series will stream exclusively on Disney+ for U.S.-residing Whovians and BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the U.K.
