Doll Riot Releases “Sheela-Na-Gig,” Announces New Album ‘Grage’
San Diego-based all-girl punk outfit Doll Riot reveals the digital release of their brand-new album, Grage, which is set for June 14. The exclusive vinyl release is available via Last Hurrah, including two unique tracks, and is limited to 500 copies.
To highlight the upcoming long player, produced by Alex Estrada, Doll Riot released their cover of PJ Harvey’s “Sheela-Na-Gig.”
Made up of London Kraus (bass), Ella Sauer (guitar), Lillee Gillum (drums, vocals), and Elena Olszak (lead vocals, guitar), Doll Riot has shared the stage with artists such as Poison Hearts and Agent Orange, Luby Sparks, Death Valley Girls, and Spray Allen.
Doll Riot’s sound reflects the ‘90s underground scene, conjuring up the riot grrrl sass and audacity of bands such as Hole, L7, The Donnas, and Bikini Kill.
While talking with Madi Coe, the band shared, “Most of our songs are written out of anger and frustration. A lot of our songs also focus on feminism.”
With their DIY spirit and relentless work ethic, Doll Riot has played more than 100 shows during the last year and a half, along with releasing singles like “Fuck You,” “Get a Life,” “Mrreowrr,” “B-29,” and “Those Days.”
Doll Riot will perform at Punk Rock Bowling the weekend of May 24-27, 2024. The girls will be in the company of legendary bands playing at the festival, including Descendents, Devo, Scowl, Madness, and Gorilla Biscuits.
Opening on a gleaming intro flowing into dirty, rumbling guitars, “Sheela-Na-Gig” pulsates with visceral textures topped by the darkly charismatic voice of Olszak, imbuing the lyrics with portentous tones. A see-saw-like, delicious guitar gives the tune a cutting, luminous outro.
Raw and grungy, brimming with nasty, alluring energy, with “Sheela-Na-Gig,” Doll Riot displays their ability to pump out savage music.
