Dominik Mysterio shares secrets of Eddie Guerrero vs Rey Mysterio custody match on 20th anniversary

Dominik Mysterio is no different from WWE fans by rewatching his dad’s epic SummerSlam clash with Eddie Guerrero all the time.

‘Dirty Dom’ is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the custody match between his father, Rey Mysterio, and Guerrero in fitting fashion.

The Phenomenal One has previously named Guerrero, who died in 2005, as the star he wished he had the chance to share the ring with.

Dominik may represent the next best thing – having adopted the late wrestling great’s ‘Latino Heat’ gimmick in both looks and personality since aligning himself with the Judgement Day.

The 28-year-old’s first direct involvement in WWE came while working with Guerrero mere months before the latter’s passing.

The stakes of the rivalry reached greater heights coming into SummerSlam 2005 when the custody of the then-eight-year-old Mysterio Jr was put on the line in a bonkers ladder match.

Dominik watched from ringside as his dad claimed the briefcase of legal documents following interference from Guerrero’s wife, Vickie.

The 20-minute encounter has gone down as one of the greatest SummerSlam matches of all time, with no one a bigger fan than Dom.

During an exclusive talkSPORT interview in February, when asked if he rewatches the ladder contest, Dominik replied: “Of course. Of course.

“I am a 20-year veteran in this business. I started in 2005. I go back and watch that match all the time.

“He’s the best, if not the greatest of all time, in my personal opinion.

“So I study everything that he did to that deadbeat.

“I try to mimic it. Because whenever I get a chance, his record against my dad, or my deadbeat, was pretty spectacular.”

As a youngster, Dominik was front and centre for the family celebrations with Rey Mysterio after his win at SummerSlam.

However, two decades on, the current Intercontinental Champion would have wanted the opposite result for kayfabe purposes.

“He was nicer to me,” the reigning two-time WWE Slammy Villain of the Year award winner added to talkSPORT.

“He gave me candy and stuff. As far as my deadbeat, he would bring me to work and put me up for… What was that lady? [the social services worker who put Dominik into kayfabe foster care after Rey and Eddie had signed their SummerSlam contracts].

“She took me away from my family… Terrible. Yeah, who does that? But I did get paid.”

Mysterio also took several shots at his dad, Rey, during our interview as part of the pair’s long-running rivalry on screen.

He told talkSPORT: “Dude wears a mask because he’s ugly, right? He has no hair.
