Donald Trump claims he ‘will be depressed and won’t bother going’ to Jon Jones comeback fight at UFC 309 if he loses US Presidential election

Donald Trump has told Joe Rogan that he may be too depressed to attend the UFC event in New York City that takes place right after election day.

The 45th president of the United States makes his bid for re-election on November 5, just days before Jon Jones faces Stipe Miocic at UFC 309. Trump plans to attend if he wins, but admits he might not be interested if the election result doesn’t go his way.

He is a keen viewer of the sport, and has been regularly attending events alongside promotional boss Dana White in the four years since losing out to Joe Biden in 2020. And he is an outspoken fan of Jones, as well as Bo Nickal who fights on the undercard.

Who is Jon Jones? Inside the life and career of one of the greatest UFC fighters in historyDonald Trump talks plans for UFC 309 days after US ElectionLast night, former United States President Donald Trump made an appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast, where the pair discussed topics from policy to the UFC’s greatest ever fighter. And he even listed top prospect Bo Nickal as a future star, among other big names in the sport.

“You know Bo Nickal?” Trump asked Rogan while discussing the injuries he suffered during an assassination attempt in July, which he feared would give him cauliflower ear like wrestling-based MMA fighters.

“How’s he going to do? I think he’s terrific, he was, like, almost undefeated in college. When is he fighting again? After the election? So I’ll either go as President or I’ll be depressed and I won’t bother going, I think they’re having a fight right after.”

Donald Trump makes Khabib Nurmagomedov jibe as he calls for Joe Rogan’s endorsementWhile Rogan attempted to keep the near-three-hour podcast honed in on politics, there were times when the conversation drifted towards fighting. And Trump showed off his knowledge of the sport and it’s characters, even comparing his presidential rival Kamala Harris to UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov.

“He endorsed me,” Trump said of Tesla founder and Twitter boss Elon Musk, before telling Rogan that he “Should do the same thing”. “He said the country’s going to fail,” he continued. “Because you cannot be voting for Kamala.

“You’re not a Kamala person, Joe, I know you, I’ve watched you, I know you almost as well as your wife, I’ve watched you for so many years. You’re not a Kamala person, you’re a Khabib person. Nobody’s going to know who Khabib is, but he was not bad, that guy. That’s your kind of person.”

Dana White opens up about friendship with Donald TrumpDonald Trump’s connection to the UFC goes back over a decade before his political career even began in 2015. He used to host events for the promotion in its infancy at his venue in Atlantic City, and has forged a close friendship with CEO Dana White over the years.

Now, White is one of his closest allies and regularly speaks publicly in support of his re-election bid. “Loyalty is really important to me,” White told Fox News earlier this year when asked about his friendship with the presidential candidate.

“And he’s been a very good friend to me. And he’s a massive fight fan… It’s not just saying, oh, the UFC got popular, but whatever. Trump was the guy who reached out to us when we couldn’t get venues and had us come to the Taj [Mahal, his former Atlantic City hotspot]. We did our first two shows over there.

He’s the guy who would reach out to me my entire career when good things happen and say, ‘hey, congratulations. I always knew you were going to do it’.

“Take any of the greatest fighters of all time. Trump is number one, the most resilient human being that I have ever met in my life… Why keep doing this?

“You’ve got money. You’ve got a great life. You got whatever. Why keep doing this? And the one thing that I can tell you, and this is a fact, this guy loves this country.”
