Eagles-Giants final score: Philadelphia runs over New York in much-needed comfortable win

The Philadelphia Eagles are 6-2 after beating the New York Giants at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday. Final score: 38 to 20.

This was a much-needed outcome for a Birds team that failed to outgain their opponent in every game prior to this result. Really nice to win comfortably for once.

And the Eagles did it despite missing two key starters in A.J. Brown and Cam Jurgens. They also had multiple injuries on defense.

The performance of the Eagles’ running game was really encouraging to see. The Giants’ bad defense certainly helped them. But the Birds previously failed to run on New York in their Week 6 loss at MetLife Stadium, where they gained just 73 yards. Taking out Tanner McKee’s three end of game kneel downs, the Eagles logged 30 carries for 278 yards.

Saquon Barkley led the way with 14 carries for a season-high 150 yards and one touchdown, which came on a 65-yard scamper. Barkley suffered a groin injury on a run that ended the third quarter. His backup, Tank Bigsby, helped to finish the game by totaling nine carries for 104 yards.

It wasn’t just the running game that was working on Sunday; Jalen Hurts was very efficient by going 15/20 for 179 yards, four touchdowns, zero interceptions, and a 141.5 passer rating. Two of his four scores were caught by Dallas Goedert.

The Eagles’ starting defense surrendered just 13 points to the Giants before the backup unit came in and gave up a garbage-time touchdown. Jaxson Dart was sacked five times.

All told, a good win for Nick Sirianni’s group.

Next up for the Eagles: a Week 9 bye to rest up and get healthy ahead of the Eagles’ big Week 10 Monday Night Football against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. And we’ll see if Howie Roseman ends up making a move or two prior to the NFL trade deadline on November 4.

Read on for a recap and stay tuned for BGN’s postgame coverage.

FIRST QUARTER UPDATES

The Giants won the opening coin toss and elected to defer. Will Shipley took a knee in the end zone to put the Eagles at their own 35-yard line (after Smael Mondon was flagged for illegal formation but then it was picked up). Jalen Hurts stepped up against pressure and could’ve ran but instead threw to DeVonta Smith, who couldn’t make the catch on a comeback effort. The Eagles’ first running play was a Saquon Barkley carry from under center (!) with six offensive linemen on the field (!) where he got his best blocking of the year (great job by the left side of the offensive line) to get into open space and to the end zone for a 65-yard touchdown! Running game back!? EAGLES 7, GIANTS 0.The Giants took over at their own 31-yard line. Facing 3rd-and-10 after Jalyx Hunt tackled a scrambling Jaxson Dart from behind to limit the quarterback to a one-yard gain, Dart’s third down pass was a bubble screen for a loss. Strong start by Vic Fangio’s defense to force the three-and-out.The Eagles took over at their own 25-yard line. Barkley ran for five yards and then Tank Bigsby (!) took a carry for 18 yards and a first down. Hurts completed a pass over the middle to DeVonta for a first down but it was wiped out by a Lane Johnson holding penalty. The combination of a Barkley run and a Barkley screen reception moved the chains into plus territory. Facing 3rd-and-3, Hurts scrambled for no gain. Facing 4th-and-3, Nick Sirianni correctly kept the offense on the field … and Dexter Lawrence jumped offside but Brett Toth was called for a false start though it was Tyler Steen who moved early. Jake Elliott came on for the 58-yard field goal attempt …. and the ball bounced off the right upright. No good. The Eagles seemed to be upset there was a whistle blown during the kick. Refs gathered after the play but nothing came of it.The Giants took over at their own 48-yard line. They went 52 yards in six plays with Patrick Johnson falling in coverage to leave Cam Skattebo wide open for a touchdown catch. Refs missed a holding penalty on Nakobe Dean. EAGLES 7, GIANTS 7.The Eagles took over at their own 47 after a good 41-yard kick return by Will Shipley. Facing 3rd-and-4 after a motioning Xavier Gipson (!) took a short pop pass, Hurts had plenty of time to throw but hit Barkley for just one yard. Facing 4th-and-3, Sirianni kept the offense on the field and Hurts scrambled up the middle for a first down. With the first quarter clock running out and the offense trying to see if they could get the Giants to jump offside, the Eagles committed a false start themselves. Very dumb.SECOND QUARTER UPDATES

Operating from under center, Hurts hit a crossing DeVonta over the middle for a 26-yard gain into the red zone. Hurts sailed a pass over DeVonta with the wide receiver available in the end zone. Facing 3rd-and-9, Hurts took off scrambling just shy of the first down marker. Hurts took a big hit from Brian Burns along the sideline and a flag was thrown … before it got picked up via replay assist. Facing 4th-and-short, the Eagles went Brotherly Shove for the first down. The Giants wanted to challenge for a fumble since it looked like Hurts lost the ball … but the head official said forward progress had been called, deeming the fumble unchallengeable. Very big break for the Eagles. Brian Daboll threw his challenge flag anyway, which just resulted in the Giants losing a challenge and a timeout. Hurts hit a wide open Barkley leaking out in the flat for a touchdown. Aided by the assistance of poor officiating, the Eagles went 53 yards in 11 plays for the score. EAGLES 14, GIANTS 7.The Giants took over at their own 31-yard line. Skattebo suffered a gruesome ankle injury and had to be carted off the field after a Dart throw to the running back was broken up by Zack Baun. Facing 3rd-and-16, Dart’s deep pass to Darius Slayton was broken up by Quinyon Mitchell, who had sticky coverage down the field. The Eagles took over at their own 13-yard line. Facing 3rd-and-7 after Hurts’ first down pass was deflected at the line of scrimmage and Barkley ran for three yards, Hurts was sacked on a blitz. 3 plays, -4 yards, punt. 0/4 on third down. The Giants took over at their own 34-yard line. They quickly moved into field goal range. Facing 3rd-and-6 after Jordan Davis sacked a scrambling Dart, Theo Johnson dropped a would-be first down catch on the money. Reed Blankenship was in position to light up the Giants tight end had the ball been caught. The Giants sent out Graham Gano for the 47-yard field goal make. EAGLES 14, GIANTS 10.The Eagles took over at their own 42-yard line with 2:46 on the clock after another solid kick return by Shipley. Barkley ran to the right edge for a first down. A toss to Barkley put him over 100 rushing for the first time this season and took the clock down to 2:00. Another Barkley carry gained a first down. Hurts to DeVonta through the air put the offense at the plus 26-yard line with the clock running. Hurts hit DeVonta again — despite the ball being thrown behind the receiver — for another first down, this one into the red zone. The Giants had an injury that stopped the clock at 0:56 and burned their final remaining timeout. Kayvon Thibodeaux’s neutral zone infraction put the Eagles at 2nd-and-2 from the 6-yard line. Looking uncertain before the snap, Jalen Hurts called the Eagles’ first timeout. Then Hurts hit Goedert on quick slant for a touchdown! Strong 7-play, 58-yard TD drive to go up by two possessions. Would’ve liked to see the Eagles go for two to go up 12 (opponent has to enter the end zone twice) instead of kicking the extra point to go up 11 (opponent has to enter the end zone just once) EAGLES 21, GIANTS 10.The Giants took a knee to end the first half with 0:21 on the clock and zero timeouts to work with.THIRD QUARTER UPDATES

The Giants took over at their own 35-yard line. Jalen Carter logged his first sack of the season on a play where Dart held the ball and tried to scramble to no avail. Facing 3rd-and-10, Dart threw across his body for what could’ve been a Kelee Ringo pick had the ball not been well underthrown into the dirt instead. Strong start to the second half by Vic Fangio’s defense. The Eagles took over at their own 24-yard line. Hurts hit DeVonta over the middle to give the offense a first down a little shy of midfield. Facing 3rd-and-4, Hurts hit DeVonta tight along the sideline for a first down into plus territory for the Eagles’ first third down conversion of the game. The offense had a delay of game penalty, which should never happen when it’s quiet on your own field. Facing 3rd-and-11, Hurts targeted Darius Cooper (!) and the undrafted rookie drew a pass interference call on the Giants. Target him more! Facing 3rd-and-15 after a Hurts sack and Barkley run for no gain, Hurts to DeVonta on a slant (off target throw but still caught) picked up nine yards for a shorter field goal attempt. Jake Elliott’s 40-yard kick was good. The Eagles did well to take 6:07 off the clock … but would’ve been ideal to go up three possessions and really put the game away. EAGLES 24, GIANTS 10.Shipley made a tackle on kickoff coverage to have the Giants take over at their own 25-yard line. Facing 3rd-and-8 after picking up one first down, Dart hit Theo Johnson over the middle for a second first down. Facing another 3rd-and-8, the Giants got hit with a false start. Facing 3rd-and-13, a scrambling Dart floated a pass to Johnson for another first down. Cooper DeJean logged a TFL to knock the Giants’ offense off schedule. Facing 3rd-and-7, Dart hit Devin Singletary on the wheel route with Nakobe Dean trailing in coverage. Facing 3rd-and-10, Dart stepped up against the initial pass rush and into a crucial and crushing sack by Jalyx Hunt (his first of the season). Gano made his 34-yard field goal attempt. EAGLES 24, GIANTS 13.Barkley took a carry to the right edge 28 yards into plus territory to end the third quarter. Really good block by Brett Toth (!) on the play. Barkley came up gimpy.FOURTH QUARTER UPDATES

Hurts took a 16-yard sack on first down. Can’t hold the ball and run backwards that far. Or maybe you can because Bigsby broke a run for 29 yards to turn 2nd-and-26 into a first down, lol. Nice job by RB2 to break through tackles for a big gain. Hurts hit Goedert for the tight end’s second touchdown of the game. Three-possession lead with 11:17 to play. EAGLES 31, GIANTS 13.The Giants took over at their own 33-yard line. Joshua Uche strip-sacked Dart for a Jordan Davis recovery! The turnover went under review … and it was overturned into an incompletion. Shame, because a real nice play by Uche. Facing 3rd-and-10, the ever-scrambling Dart got sacked by Moro Ojomo. Facing 4th-and-11, Dart hit Slayton for a deep touchdown … that got called back for offensive pass interference on Slayton. Facing 4th-and-21, the Giants sent out the punt team. Lol, why give up?The Eagles took over at their own 27-yard line with over nine minutes remaining in the game. Bigsby ripped off multiple runs to get the Eagles in plus territory. Facing 3rd-and-6, Hurts aired it out deep to … Jahan Dotson, who made a great catch to Moss his defender and score a touchdown! Wowza. EAGLES 38, GIANTS 13.The Giants took over at their own 35-yard line with 5:59 left in the game. The Eagles put their backup defense in. The Giants needed just three plays to move into goal-to-go territory. Facing 4th-and-goal from the 2-yard line after a good tackle by Jeremiah Trotter Jr. on Dart, the rookie quarterback found the end zone. Bad job by the backups to allow the Giants to initially move the ball so quickly but good to slow them down at little bit before allowing the garbage-time TD. EAGLES 38, GIANTS 20.The Giants’ onside kick was recovered by Goedert. The Eagles took over at their own 45-yard line with 2:44 left in the game. The Eagles put their backups in on offense and Bigsby picked up 16 yards while fighting through contact and getting pushed by the offensive line to go over 100 yards and get to the two-minute warning. The Eagles ran victory formation to run out the clock!FINAL SCORE: EAGLES 38, GIANTS 20
