Eagles News: Philadelphia’s most overblown concern
Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …
Eagles mailbag: What’s an underrated strength and weakness of the team? – PhillyVoice
Question via wgordon711 (via Bluesky): What’s the most overblown concern fans have right now? While not among the strengths of the team, the safety position is fine. Blankenship is an above average starter, and I thought Sydney Brown had an encouraging training camp and preseason from the perspective of not making obvious mistakes, and generally being where he was supposed to be. We also saw Andrew Mukuba make plays in the preseason, and in my opinion there’s little doubt that Cooper DeJean will play well there if Vic Fangio opts to play him on the back end in the base defense.
Eagles announce 8 captains for the 2025 season – BGN
Reed Blankenship has been a bigger leader than some might realize; he’s previously served on the team’s leadership council. Interesting that he’s a captain when he’s set to be a free agent after this season. Thought there would’ve been a contract extension for him by now.
Howie Keeps Tweaking – Iggles Blitz
Dallas made huge news on Thursday by trading Micah Parsons to Green Bay for two first round picks and DT Kenny Clark. Wow. That is one huge move for both teams. The Packers had a good defense so adding a dynamic pass rusher makes them even more dangerous. They now are a bit iffy at DT and don’t have top CBs. But that is one talented defense overall. I give them credit for making a bold move. Dallas? Jerry Jones is a great owner. He is a lousy GM. You can make the point that there is some logic to trading Parsons, but the timing is terrible. The Cowboys did need DT help in a big way, but they just traded away their best player. That only makes sense if you’re rebuilding. Dallas is too talented to be rebuilding.
How a couple of Eagles DTs became brothers behind the scenes – NBCSP
When Byron Young’s father, Kenny, died suddenly in late March, Young returned home to Mississippi but stayed just a week. Young was quickly back in Philadelphia to chase his dream. “I know if he was here, he would have told me, ‘All right, you can cry a little bit but go ahead and go back to work,’” Young said this week. “Because that’s the kind of man he was and that’s kind of what I try to carry every single day.” While Young, 24, left his family to return to Philly in early April, he at least had his teammate and friend Gabe Hall. Young and Hall grew extremely close during the course of the 2024 season and now consider each other brothers. Hall was there for Young during a tough part of his life this spring. “He was the only person I felt comfortable going to and being with him and crying on his shoulder,” Young explained. “That’s something that a lot of guys might struggle with but he and I have that friendship to where we can connect with each other on a deeper level than a lot of guys might just think as teammates. I would say he’s a brother to me and it goes past football.” That’s what made it so special this week when both on-the-bubble defensive tackles made the Eagles’ initial 53-man roster.
How Connor Barwin became the Eagles’ stand-in quarterback tasked with balancing a top-heavy roster – PHLY
Las Vegas Raiders defensive tackle Thomas Booker, who spent last season with the Eagles, credited Barwin and player development assistant Matt Leo for his growth from offseason flier to rotational piece for the Eagles last season. Roughly 18 months after signing the former Stanford prospect to a reserve/futures contract, the team traded Booker to the Las Vegas Raiders midway through training camp for cornerback Jakorian Bennett. Booker is now slated to start for the Raiders. “Connor Barwin, Matt Leo, a lot of other guys on the staff, they do a great job of developing the practice squad guys,” Booker said last year after making the Eagles’ 53-man roster. “In terms of actually giving them pointers, like, ‘Alright, we’ve looked through all your film this week against the ones, what can you do better? Your body leverage is a little high here, that’s why your power rush isn’t working as well. Your hand use isn’t there. Maybe your recognition isn’t as quick as it should be.’ All that stuff is drilled week through week. That kind of gave me an idea of where I was as a player and where I could improve.”

Commanders fans are confident about the ‘25 season, but a bit nervous about depth at DE and interior OL – Hogs Haven
Firstly, right guard is really the only position on the roster with an injured starter as the Commanders head into the Week 1 home game against the New York Giants. Sam Cosmi, as you will no doubt recall, tore his ACL in the divisional round of the playoffs in the comprehensive victory over the top-seeded Lions. He had surgery in late-January and simply isn’t ready to return to play. Cosmi spent the entire training camp and preseason on the PUP list, and there he will remain for at least the first four weeks of the regular season. While Andrew Wylie should be a capable replacement, Cosmi’s absence will certainly test the Commanders depth.
Cowboys will still struggle to stop the run, even after the Kenny Clark trade – Blogging The Boys
With Odighizuwa, Dante Fowler, and one of the young ends expected to be the starters along side Clark on the defensive line, the Cowboys have went from one of the worst run defending defensive lines in the NFL, to still bottom half of the league. Ultimately, the Jones’ traded away one of the biggest strengths of the team (pass rush) to slightly improve their ability to stop the run. At the end of the day, the Cowboys will likely not be the 31st ranked defense when it comes to rush EPA, but can they be good enough to balance their lack of pass rush that could be a much bigger weakness now heading into the 2025 regular season?
With Micah Parsons trade, Jerry Jones and the Cowboys did damage that will last for years – SB Nation
With Micah Parsons there was a shot Dallas could be competitive in 2025. Without him the defense is nothing. There’s ostensibly no pass rushers on the roster worth a damn, and a bad season will only feed Jerry’s bad urges more, to drop players, retool, and hope-against-hope this team can return to its 90s glory. Unfortunately the reality is that Dallas is much, much closer to bottoming out like the Saints than getting close to their former dominance.
Big Blue View mailbag: Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll, defining success for Giants, more – Big Blue View
I know it might surprise some people but I really don’t think they are coupled at this point. Co-owner John Mara said a while ago that the GM and head coach have different jobs and can each be judged on their own. If ownership thinks the talent on the roster is better than the results on the field I can see Schoen staying and Daboll going. I can see Schoen trying to support Daboll, but he isn’t going to lose his own job over whether Daboll stays or goes.
