Earps and Toone included in Women’s World 11

Monday 15 January 2024 20:17

Manchester United duo Mary Earps and Ella Toone have been named in the 2023 Women’s World 11 at The Best FIFA Football Awards.

The United pair are two of the 11 finalists to have received the most votes in their position, after making the 23-strong shortlist earlier this month.

As the only global football award decided exclusively by professional footballers, Earps and Toone were favourable choices of the more than 6,000 players who submitted selections, recognising their contributions for club and country between 1 August 2022 and 20 August 2023.

Former United striker Alessia Russo, who represented the Reds in the aforementioned time before her summer transfer to Arsenal, was also included in the XI.

Along with making history for club, Earps and Toone joined United captain Katie Zelem in playing for England at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand last summer, where the Lionesses finished runners-up to Spain.

Toone was in fruitful form across 2023, ending our league campaign with 11 goal involvements across 22 games. The attacking midfielder also played a key role in her nation’s road to the final Down Under, bagging a sublime goal against Australia in the semi-final.

Earps, meanwhile, saved a penalty in the final before picking up the Golden Glove award. It was her second goalkeeping honour of the season, having set a record number of Women’s Super League clean sheets (14) to win the division’s namesake prize.

The duo were instrumental in our 2022/23 success, with the Reds going on to finish second in the league, our highest position since promotion to the WSL in 2019.

Marc Skinner’s side also booked a spot in the final of the FA Cup, making our Wembley bow in a memorable afternoon, despite suffering a narrow defeat to Chelsea.

It was a special year for Earps and Toone, who are worthy inclusions in the World 11. Congratulations, Ella and Mary!
