England face club vs country row with Newcastle and Tottenham internationals to travel to Australia in May

Gareth Southgate is on for a club vs country row with Newcastle and Tottenham set to take all their international stars for their Australia friendly.

It’s been announced that Newcastle will play Premier League rivals Tottenham at Melbourne Cricket Ground on May 22.

This announcement won’t please Southgate, who may pick a number of Newcastle and Spurs playersCredit: GettyThese matches come just three weeks before the start of Euro 2024 with Newcastle stars Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier vying for a place in England’s squad, as is Tottenham’s James Maddison.

The Daily Mail reports that both clubs are intent on bringing all international players meaning the three Englishmen are set to jet off Down Under.

Newcastle’s FA Cup exit last weekend opened the door for the Magpies to face Spurs in a post-season friendly, which will see the two clubs jet off for Australia immediately after their final league game of the season on May 19.

The Magpies will then face an A-League All Stars XI on Friday May 24.

England’s first outing at the tournament sees them face Serbia on Sunday June 16, three weeks after the Premier League season’s climax.

The news will is also likely to affect the South American players in the Newcastle and Tottenham squads with the Copa America kicking off on June 21.
