Euro 2024: England’s Kane joins Shearer on seven European Championship goals
Sports Mole rounds up the all-time top scorers list in the European Championship, with Harry Kane netting his seventh of the competition against Netherlands.
England captain Harry Kane moved level with Alan Shearer on seven European Championship goals when he found the back of the net in his country’s 2-1 success over Netherlands in the semi-finals of Euro 2024 on Wednesday night.
Kane scored from the penalty spot in the last-four contest after a VAR check on a challenge from Denzel Dumfries led to a controversial spot kick being awarded to Gareth Southgate’s side.
The Bayern Munich striker was caught by Dumfries when he struck towards goal, and following advice from VAR, the referee pointed to the spot, with Kane levelling the scores before Ollie Watkins hit a late winner for the Three Lions.
The 30-year-old’s goal against Denmark in the group stage saw him join Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney as the only England players to score in four separate major tournaments.
The goal versus the Danes was also his fifth in European Championships, becoming only the 23rd player to reach that tally in the competition’s history and moving level with the likes of Marco van Basten, Robert Lewandowski and Zinedine Zidane.
However, he moved onto six with his header against Slovakia in the round of 16, and six then became seven on Wednesday evening, as he expertly found the bottom corner from the penalty spot.
Kane is now his country’s joint all-time leading European Championship goalscorer alongside Shearer, who played in nine games at the famous tournament, and he will be bidding to move out on his own when the Three Lions tackle Spain in Sunday’s final.
Following Kane’s latest goal, which left England one match away from lifting their first-ever European Championship trophy, Sports Mole looks at all of the players to have scored five or more goals at Euros.
