One of pop culture’s biggest celebrity betrayals is coming to screen next year, when Ryan Murphy premieres Feud: Capote vs. The Swans. FX’s second installment of the American Crime Story creator’s anthology series will cover the breakup between writer Truman Capote and the Hollywood socialites he would befriend and later deceive. Tom Hollander (The White Lotus) stars as Capote in the first official trailer, which you can watch above.
The famous feud began after the writer’s release of In Cold Blood, the gruesome crime novel about the murder of a family in rural Kansas. Thanks to the book’s success, Capote became one of America’s most prominent and respected writers. He later surrounded himself with glamorous women and New York socialites that he dubbed “the Swans,” only to betray them by publishing their secrets in Esquire. Capote already had a relationship with Esquire at the time, when he wrote Breakfast at Tiffany’s for its November 1958 issue. Feud is also based on Laurence Leamer’s 2021 book, Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era.
The first two episodes will premiere on FX and stream on Hulu on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. A special Director’s Cut of the first episode will also be available on FXX. That’s actually pretty damn enticing, because Feud is directed by Good Will Hunting and Milk director Gus Van Sant. The eight-episode series will also feature an all-star lineup of Naomi Watts, Chloë Sevigny, Calista Flockhart, Diane Lane, Demi Moore, and Molly Ringwald as the Swans. Heavy hitters! Until then, you can read the Capote story at the heart of the series here.
