Fire guts wooden structures at Kaneshie

Reports indicate that fire has razed down a number of wooden structures opposite the Kanshie Advans Savings and Loans.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire started in the early hours of Sunday, June 23, around 2 a.m.

Residents have lost their belongings to the ravaging fire, which swept through the wooden structures effortlessly.

According to some residents, they began quenching the inferno with available water after several calls to the Ghana National Fire Service proved futile.

No deaths have so far been recorded. However, some of the residents who tried quenching the fire before the arrival of the GNFS sustained burns on their bodies.

It is unclear what may have caused the fire outbreak.

Efforts of the personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service brought the fire under control.

Some people living around the area who spoke to GBC News alleged that it took officials of the GNFS more than two hours to get to the scene.

Meanwhile, the Operations Officer from the Accra City Fire Station, Makola, ADO1 Opoku, said the station received the “distress call around 4 a.m., and the service responded quickly to the call by showing up at the place to render their service”.

He indicated that even though they were entangled with poor direction to the incident scene, they managed to help out when they finally arrived.

“We were using the fire outlook mechanism, whereby we use emanating smoke to identify where exactly the scene was, until we met the police patrol team who led us here.”

ADO1 Opoku further stated that, due to the delay to the scene as a result of the poor direction, his team was attacked by the angry residents.

“We were fortunate to have the police here, who managed to control the crowd and pave the way for us to salvage the fire.”

He urged the public to desist from prank calls, indicating that the act affects their work.

“We will expect the public to give adequate details when fire breaks out to aid the fire service to know which fire hydrant to bring on board,” he added.
