Former Chelsea star reveals he could have joined Liverpool before moving to Stamford Bridge

Chelsea and Liverpool are two of the four original heavyweights in the Premier League era, and the two teams have had multiple memorable battles over the years. However, their battles are not restricted to the football pitch alone but also to the transfer market.

While some players have represented both clubs, some players have chosen one over the other. But in a unique story, former Chelsea star Florent Malouda has revealed that he could have joined the Reds before making the move to Stamford Bridge.

In an interview with Racing Tipster, Malouda looked back on his career and opened up about how he could have made the move to Anfield. “I mean, it was just a matter of timing because the deal was pretty close, because it was actually Gerard Houllier who made the deal.”

Malouda also shed light on his relationship with Houllier and the impact that the latter had on his career. “Houllier was a mentor to me. I always went to him for advice, he was always praising the Premier League.”

“I remember we were on the training ground, I think he called (Liverpool chief executive) Rick Parry and confirmed there was an interest. He was pushing for me to go there.”

“But in terms of timing, it was more like I was expecting an offer from Chelsea just to have options. Real Madrid, as well, at the time made an offer.”

How Malouda fared at ChelseaMalouda went on to make 229 appearances for Chelsea, winning the Premier League title, three FA Cups, and the Champions League trophy with the Blues.

And understandably, Malouda looked back on his time at Stamford Bridge with fond memories, saying, “Before joining, I came a few times to London to support Drogba. So I had more connections with the players on the Chelsea side, and I had more connections with Liverpool on the management side. But I mean history proved that it was not a bad choice to join Chelsea!”
