Former UFC welterweight champion compares Ilia Topuria’s star power to that of Conor McGregor as he makes wild proposal

Former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman has compared Ilia Topuria’s rise in the promotion to that of the sport’s biggest star Conor McGregor as he has made a wild proposal.

This past Saturday at UFC 308, featherweight champion, Ilia Topuria, further catapulted himself into superstardom when he became the first fighter to knock out Max Holloway.

Ahead of his bout against ‘Blessed’, the 27-year-old seemingly got stuck into an online feud with former UFC double champion, Conor McGregor, with the two consistently going back and forth with each other on social media.

After increasing his star power, he has increased his chances of headlining an event at the 78,000-seater recently renovated stadium.

Former UFC welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman has made an extremely bold proposal following Topuria’s performance, admitting that he believes the Spaniard is at the same level of star power as ‘The Notorious’.

“This kid is special and I think people are starting to see it, it’s just something about guys that are special like that. When Conor McGregor came in, he was special, you could just tell,” Usman began to explain on the Pound 4 Pound Podcast.

“Disruptors like this come in, they change the sport in a certain type of way so that’s where I see Ilia and I said it, I love Max, I think Max is a phenomenal fighter, one of the best ever in that featherweight division and Ilia Topuria just went out there and did exactly what he said he will do,” Usman continued.

Usman believes now would be the perfect time for the UFC to put together a matchup between the old star and the new star.

“To send him to the moon right now, why not give him Conor (McGregor) at 155lbs? Just say, ‘Hey let’s make the fight at 155lbs’, why not give him Conor? That would make a (lot of money), a stadium in Spain, he becomes the next Conor McGregor,” Usman proposed.

Despite that, earlier this Monday, the Irish superstar once again hinted at his retirement from MMA after responding to a fan’s comment on X (formerly Twitter).
