Gabourey Sidibe Shares the Special Meanings Behind Her Twins’ Names

There are precious meanings behind the names of Gabourey Sidibe and Brandon Frankel’s twins.
The Oscar nominee, who gave birth to daughter Maya and son Cooper back in April, recently revealed how the couple chose their babies’ names.
“Brandon always wanted to name a son Cooper, so we can call him ‘Coop,'” Gabourey, 41, told Shutterstock, The Shade Room reported June 6, “and Maya was named shortly before our baby moon to the Mayan Riviera in Mexico.”
The Precious actress added, “Both twins have traditional West African middle names after members of my family,” though she did not reveal what they are.
Gabourey and Brandon, who married in 2021, shared pics from their vacation in Mexico on Instagram in January, a month before they announced her pregnancy.
“For some real New Year fun and excitement, @brandontour and I decided to spend it in Mexico! (We were asleep by 9:30pm),” the actress captioned one photo, which shows her and her husband kissing as he lays his hand over her stomach. The gesture did not go unnoticed by several fans.
When asked if she was pregnant, Gabourey responded, “Haaaaa! He kinda just likes to rest his hand there sometimes. Like a shelf!”

In the comments section of an identical post Brandon shared, the actress also responded to users’ speculation that the two were expecting. “You and this hand man,” she wrote to her husband. “It’s provocative! Gets the people going!”
Days before Gabourey announced the birth of their twins, Brandon shared a special message for his wife. “Forever my Queen,” he wrote June 4 alongside a pic of himself kissing her hand. “I love this photo- I celebrate you every day. My love. My best friend. My babies’ Mama. My world. I love you the mostest. You’re my happy ending and my forever after.”

They later modified the spelling of his name in order to meet California’s legal guidelines, which only permit letters from the English alphabet. Switching over to roman numerals, the parents agreed to spell his name, X Æ A-Xii.
“X, the unknown variable,” Grimes explained on Twitter. “Æ, my elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence) A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent.”
Grimes continued, “A=Archangel, my favorite song” with an accompanying a rat and sword emoji. “Metal rat.”
In March 2022, she announced they had welcomed daughter Exa Dark Sideræl Musk via surrograte.
“Exa is a reference to the supercomputing term exaFLOPS (the ability to perform 1 quintillion floating-point operations per second),” she said. “Dark, meanwhile, is ‘the unknown. People fear it but truly it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe.'”
Sideræl—pronounced “sigh-deer-ee-el”—is “the true time of the universe, star time, deep space time, not our relative earth time,” she said, and a nod to her favorite Lord of the Rings character, Galadriel, who “chooses to abdicate the ring.”
