The eagerly anticipated European championships gets underway on Friday night, three years on from Italy’s penalty shoot-out victory over England in the final at Wembley, which saw them crowned champions of Europe for the second time.

Germany are hosts this time around, and will be looking for a strong tournament in front of their own fans having struggled to make an impact on any of the last three major tournaments, which includes back to back World Cup group stage exits.

Germany not having to qualify means they haven’t played a competitive match since their 4-2 win over Costa Rica in the final group game of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which proved too little too late having picked up just one point from their opening two games.

After a disastrous 2023 in which Germany won just three and lost six out of 13 matches, Julian Nagelsmann’s side have managed to win three of the four matches they’ve played since the turn of the year, and head into the Euros buoyed by their recent results.

Wins in March against France and the Netherlands were followed up last week with a goalless draw against Ukraine and a come-from-behind win against Greece last Friday night before their tournament gets underway against Scotland in Munich on Friday.

From Munich, Nagelsmann’s men will travel to Stuttgart to take on Hungary for their second Group A match, before closing out the group stage in Frankfurt against Switzerland.

Scotland head into just their second major competition this century looking to go at least one step further than they managed at this same competition three years ago.

Steve Clarke’s men finished bottom of the group stage last time out, picking up just one point from their three matches, and after three years of growth which includes a very promising qualifying campaign which saw a famous 2-0 win over Spain in Glasgow.

The Scots lost just one of their eight qualification matches in Group A to secure a second placed finish in the group and automatic spot in their second consecutive Euros, but have found wins difficult to come by since the start of last season.

The Tartan Army have won just one of their last nine matches in all competitions, which came in a cagey 2-0 win over minnows Gibraltar last week.

Although that run of games has seen defeats to the likes of England, Spain, France and the Netherlands, the Scots have also lost at home to Northern Ireland and been held to 2-2 draw at home against Finland in their last three games, of which neither nation have qualified for the Euros this summer.

After Friday night’s opener in Munich, Scotland will then travel to Cologne to take on Switzerland before their final group outing against Hungary in Stuttgart, which could have a lot riding on it for both teams.

Germany lead Scotland 8-4 in head-to-head wins from their 17 matches, including wins in their last three meetings, the most recent of which coming in a Euro 2016 qualifier in Glasgow in 2015.

Scotland haven’t beaten Germany since a 1-0 friendly win in Bremen in 1999.
