Ghana defender Alexander Djiku has apologized to Ghanaian fans after the team’s early exit from the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
The West African powerhouse’s hopes of advancing to the knockout stages were slim after a 2-2 draw against Mozambique on Monday night. The elimination was confirmed when Cameroon, coming from behind, defeated Gambia.
This means the Black Stars have suffered a back-to-back group stage elimination from the African Cup of Nations.
Djiku delivered an outstanding performance for the Black Stars despite the team’s early exit from the tournament. He scored in the team’s opening game against Cape Verde, where Ghana succumbed to a 2-1 defeat.
The Fenerbache defender in a post on his social media page has apologized to Ghanaians after the painful exit in the group stages.
“Words will certainly not be enough to erase the disillusionment. 💔🙏🏾 We are disappointed and very sorry for our Ghanaian people that we have failed at this stage of the competition, but if you only knew how grateful we are to have been supported by you, our Ghanaian fans.❤️💛” he wrote on X sighted by Footballghana.com.
The tough-tackling defender will fly to join his Fenerbache teammates to continue the season after Ghana’s exit.
