Some bloggers nationwide are excited about the initiative that social media company Meta has announced that content creators from Nigeria and Ghana can now earn money on Facebook starting Monday, July 1, 2024, as it rolled out two monetization features.
However, social media industry players want the government to institutionalize policies and directives for the country to benefit from the initiative.
Content monetization plays a critical role in job creation and increasing household income in the fight against poverty.
In an engagement with some bloggers in the social media space in Ghana, they believe the monetization of Facebook has given the industry players another channel to earn money by creating good content and gaining numbers and followers.
They believe with the help of monetization; most people can get collaborations with some big brands and companies.
Ameyaw Kissi Debrah, who is known professionally as Ameyaw Debrah, a Ghanaian celebrity blogger, indicated that at the rate at which unemployment is on the rise the social media space is an avenue for young people to take advantage.
“There is so much opportunity on the social media space, where unemployed can create jobs for themselves,” he said.
He added to the fact that the monetization is going to reduce the pressure on most young people who are waiting for the government to offer them jobs.
Listing some challenges that will come up with the monetization, he mentioned that, “already there are lots of things happening on the social media platforms that are not in tune with societal morals,” and he wants the government to streamline the space to prevent bad content.
Ameyaw Debrah also reiterated that the social media space in advanced countries is the avenue for the government to collect tax from persons who earn money on social media.
Another Ghanaian online blogger Augustus Koranteng Kyei professionally known as Kobby Kyei, stated YouTube and X were the only platforms that have monetization status and if Facebook has added it, it’s welcoming news.
He also emphasized on how the monetization of Facebook will be able to solve some economic challenges in the Ghanaian economy.
“Most of the Ghanaian youth are unemployed, so the fact that they can now create good content, post on Facebook, and get paid will help them get a source of income” he said.
He also pleaded with the social network service to do as they have said because it really means a lot to the creatives and also the industry.
“This is huge for everyone who creates content on Facebook so I feel the government should step in because the youth are always complaining about how they have no job opportunities” he added.
He warned all the creatives and content creators to make sure they do not ruin other people’s reputations just because they want to be followed or noticed.
“Create good content that will be impactful and humanitarian and to be able to make good money and also benefit the youth” he stated.
