Gran Turismo 7’s 1.49 Update Could Be A Big One

June passed us by without a new update for Gran Turismo 7, breaking a cycle of consistent monthly updates since January. With no customary Kazunori Yamauchi posted last week, it looked like no 1.49 would be coming in the immediate future – until a rather notable announcement from Polyphony Digital.

With the Gran Turismo World Series, its official esports championship, making a real-world stop in Montreal this weekend, it’s confirmed that details of update 1.49 will be revealed during the event.

That in isolation is an unusual turn of events, with even the game’s largest update – last November’s Spec II – confined to an online-only reveal. Presumably, then, this is set to be a pretty big update if Polyphony wants to make a big song and dance about it.

It gets even more interesting when you consider a data leak from last summer following the game’s 1.34 update. It added references within the code to the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Montreal’s Grand Prix circuit. Consider that it’s also been quite a long time since GT7 last had a track added, funnily enough, as part of the Spec II update, and you can put two and two together.

That’s all speculation for now, anyway, as we have no real indication of what the update will include.

Of course, we’re expecting at least three new cars. Genesis recently unveiled its X Gran Racer VGT Concept, a racing version of the VGT introduced to GT7 at the turn of the year which seems like a slam-dunk inclusion.

Anything else would just be a pure, baseless guess. Maybe Polyphony fancies really leaning into its Canadian hosts by adding the Bricklin SV-1.

If you’re keen to find out full details as soon as possible, you can tune into the Gran Turismo World Series from 10pm UK time on 6 July. Or keep this page bookmarked, as I’ve got nothing better to do with my Saturday evening than update this with the details.
