Graveman expected to miss ’24 after shoulder surgery

Astros right-hander Kendall Graveman is expected to miss the entire 2024 season after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder last week.
Graveman, who was acquired from the White Sox at last year’s Trade Deadline, posted a 2.42 ERA over 23 appearances down the stretch with Houston. He missed the Astros’ postseason run, however, while dealing with right shoulder discomfort.
Graveman acknowledged at the time that he pitched through the issue — which he believes began while pitching in Boston in late August — for the final month of the regular season.
After being eliminated in the American League Championship Series, Graveman underwent a program of rest and rehab this offseason before returning to a flat-ground throwing program in preparation for Spring Training. Unfortunately, the discomfort in his shoulder returned after he began throwing, ultimately resulting in last week’s procedure.
Graveman, who turned 33 in December, was set to enter the final season of a three-year, $24 million deal he signed with the White Sox after helping the Astros win the AL pennant in 2021.
Though Houston already has some options to pick up the bullpen slack, general manager Dana Brown said the club is focused on adding to its ‘pen depth via free agency or trade.
“I feel like we have some internal candidates that are good,” Brown said, “but we’re still in the market for relievers.”
