GG Jackson will be out for the foreseeable future.
Tim Bontemps of ESPN reported that the Memphis Grizzlies forward had broken the fifth metatarsal in his right foot earlier in the week and has surgery scheduled for next week.
Tim Bontemps @TimBontempsThe Grizzlies say GG Jackson broke his fifth metatarsal in his right foot earlier this week, and will be having surgery next week.
“While playing basketball outside of Dallas on August 27, after attempting a contested layup, Jackson II experienced an unstable landing on his right foot,” the Grizzlies said in a statement, per Damichael Cole of the Memphis Commercial Appeal. “Subsequent imaging revealed a broken fifth metatarsal in his right foot, which will require surgery to repair.”
Jackson averaged 14.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 48 games for the Grizzlies in 2023-24. The 2023 second-round pick showed promise in his rookie season, but his injury could make it difficult to build on that during his sophomore season.
The Grizzlies went 27-55 and missed the postseason for the first time since 2020. The season was derailed by a lack of availability from Ja Morant, who was limited to just nine games.
Memphis took Zach Edey in the 2024 NBA Draft and hope that a core built around Morant, Jaren Jackson, Marcus Smart, Desmond Bane and Edey can lift the team back toward the postseason. A solid bench option like Jackson would have helped, but the franchise will hope that he can make an impact at some point in the season.
