Harvey Weinstein Hospitalized In New York After Return From Upstate Prison
Harvey Weinstein was hospitalized upon returning to New York after an appeals court nullified his 2020 rape conviction.
According to the Associated Press, the Weinstein was moved from city jails to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan.
Harveyâs Health Issues
Weinsteinâs lawyer, Arthur Aidala, stated the former movie mogul is suffering from many medical complications. He stated he is in need of intense care to return to good health.
âIt seems like he needs a lot of help, physically. Heâs got a lot of problems,â Aidala said.
He continued, âHeâs getting all kinds of tests. Heâs somewhat of a train wreck health-wise.âÂ
The Miramax co-founder reportedly has several ailments which include diabetes and sleep apnea. Additionally, he has eye problems.
Although the 72-year-old is allegedly declining physically, Aidala says heâs mentally intact. Furthermore, Harveyâs legal rep says heâs remained grounded. He stated Weinstein is âsharp as a tackâ and added that his âfeet are firmly planted on the ground.â
Weinsteinâs attorney stated that the Bellevue physicians must run several tests before he can be transferred to a Rikerâs Island jail complex. The former movie-maker remains in custody at Bellevue, according to New York City Department of Correction spokesperson, Frank Dwyer. Although his 2020 conviction was overturned, he will not be freed because he was convicted in LA for another case. In 2022, Mr. Weinstein received a rape conviction and was ordered to serve 16 years in prison.
What Will Happen Next In Court?
However, vacating Harveyâs sentence means the 23 years of prison time he faced is erased. Furthermore, a retrial was ordered. Prosecutors are seeking to retry him on charges that he orally raped a TV and film producer assistant in 2006. Additionally, they plan to retry the disgraced producer for raping an aspiring actor in 2013.
Moreover, Aidala plans to notify a judge when Weinstein goes to court on Wednesday that a retrial should occur after Labor Day.
Thomas Mailey, a spokesperson for the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, confirmed Weinstein was handed over to the city Department of Correction. Previously, Weinstein was incarcerated at the Mohawk Correctional Facility, about 160 kilometers northwest of Albany.
