Hornets’ Charles Lee prioritizes growth while losses mount early in season
The Charlotte Hornets had a prime opportunity to secure a much-needed win on Tuesday night, even without star guard LaMelo Ball, who was sidelined with an ankle injury. Instead, Charlotte let another fourth-quarter lead slip away, falling 116–112 to the previously winless New Orleans Pelicans. The loss dropped the Hornets to 3–5 on the season, while the Pelicans improved to 1–6 with their first victory of the year.
Charlotte entered the fourth quarter with a six-point advantage but struggled to generate offense down the stretch. The Hornets were outscored 29–19 in the final period, marking the second time this season they have blown a lead entering the fourth. Earlier in the year, Charlotte surrendered a 10-point cushion against the Philadelphia 76ers, ultimately losing that game as well.
Despite the repeated late-game struggles, head coach Charles Lee has continued to rely on his rookies in crunch time. Sion James, Kon Knueppel and Ryan Kalkbrenner have all earned significant closing minutes in the early portion of the season. After the loss, Lee emphasized the importance of balancing player development with competing for wins.
“I think you can have the best of both worlds: playing young guys, letting them develop while also trying to win some of these games and learn,” Lee said.
Two of those rookies delivered standout performances. Knueppel recorded his first career double-double with 20 points, 12 rebounds and two assists. Kalkbrenner added a double-double of his own, finishing with 10 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks while anchoring the interior defense.
The Hornets will have two days off before returning to action Friday in Miami, where they will look to avenge an earlier 27-point loss to the Heat.
