How did Chop Robinson get his nickname?
There are plenty of fun nicknames in the NFL, both current and past. Another excellent nickname joins the pantheon this weekend as Chop Robinson was selected by the Miami Dolphins with the 21st pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. While his given name is Demeioun Robinson, the Penn State pass rusher has gone by a variation of âPork Chopâ his entire life.
We have to go all the way back for the origins of his nickname. When Robinson was born in 2003, he was so massive, his (heroic) mother nicknamed him âPork Chopâ and it was later shortened to a single word.
âI was 14 pounds when I was born and my mom gave me the nickname,â Robinson said at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine. âThen, once I got older, I started to slim down. I couldnât have people calling me âPork Chopâ anymore because I wasnât big, so I kept âChop.ââ
Like most of us when we hear our formal names, Robinson only hears âDemeiounâ when heâs in trouble. I guess itâs true that pro athletes are just like us.
At home, he doesnât go by âChopâ nor âDemeioun,â but another nickname from birth.
âI have a household name thatâs actually âPlump,ââ Robinson said. âSo, I basically have two nicknames but my household name is âPlump.â Nobody knows that.â
We all know it now.
Personally, I donât think I could call the man âPlumpâ to his face, anyway. Heâs 6â3â, 254 pounds and ran a 4.48 40-yard dash at the combine. Robinson is a likely late first-round selection on Thursday night of the 2024 NFL Draft.
